About the Artist

The mystery of our spiritual journey through life has inspired my work. I use mixed media and acrylic on wood panel with sculptural elements to encourage the viewer to interact with the image emotionally, physically and intellectually. Sculptural items reinforce the theme of nature in both the representative component and its abstract surrounding. Conspicuously natural materials, such as wood, metal, bone, and ivory, are carved into a personal language of shapes. They create a sense of history and ritual. A dialogue occurs between the symbolic content of the abstract and the representative content of the painting it surrounds.

Billy Keen’s roots are on the high plains of North Texas near the town of Wichita Falls. His love of the outdoors, wild places, and respect for our earth has influenced each piece he creates. His three-dimensional paintings reflect his experience in wood sculpture, ceramics, photography, print making, blacksmithing, painting and fiber painting. Keen’s artistic pathways have taken him from illustration to art/creative direction, teaching, being juror, and receiving numerous awards for his unique style. Billy Keen’s stunning creations have hung in galleries across the country, including a Smithsonian Affiliate, a number of private collections, as well as the esteemed Air Force art collection.
